I frequently get asked by patients, what the difference is between Cool sculpting and EMSCULPT?

The difference is tremendous.

Cool sculpting uses cold temperatures (or cryolipolysis) to kill fat cells.

EMSCULPT uses high intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) to cause muscle contractions to build muscle, and it does it in such an extreme way (with supra maximal muscle contractions that cannot be reproduced with human exercise) that it also causes fat cells to die.

So…….Cool sculpting kills fat cells. EMSCULPT builds muscle AND kills fat cells.

Cool sculpting covers a much smaller area in each treatment session than EMSCULPT.

EMSCULPT actually increases overall basal metabolic rate by increasing muscle mass. Cool sculpting does not.

Both devices are FDA cleared devices.

Is the fat loss permanent?

Anytime a fat cell dies (which occurs by apoptosis), it is gone forever. So that loss of fat is permanent. However, other fat cells can expand if caloric intake increases. This is applicable to both devices. However, building muscle with EMSCULPT does help by increasing the metabolic activity and energy utilization by those muscles that both grow in number and size of fibers. The muscles continue to increase (up to 23 % at the abdominal level with 27% fat reduction) in clinical trials for 6 months following only 4 treatments without any maintenance treatments of EMSCULPT. At one year follow up, the muscle mass is still 17% greater than prior to undergoing those 4 treatments and the fat loss is still at 23%.

Side Effects

Cool sculpting can result in significant pain and discomfort or nerve pain that sometimes may persist for many months or more after the procedure has been completed. EMSCULPT may result in mild muscle soreness, as if from working out, that typically will resolve over several days after treatment.
